What is a fundamental difference between most peace groups and Teach Peace?

The name of most peace groups helps highlight one major difference. Great organizations, like Grandmothers for Peace, are composed of a subset of people who in this case happen to be grandmothers. We think groups aligned with professions, interests, or phases of life are wonderful. Teach Peace provides resources and services to schools, churches, and other organizations to help magnify their impact because we are service organization for both individuals and groups.

Teach Peace is unique because we combine student leadership development with acts of kindness to help people live with dignity.

Who started Teach Peace?

The organization is the result of grass root calls to reach peace by teaching peace.

The organization started when Dave Dionisi was approached by Mary Wind following an American Hiroshima book presentation. Often readers of the American Hiroshima book would finish the book with the question, "what can I do to make a difference?" Mary challenged Dave to help people understand the threats to America's democracy and solutions for a more peaceful world by creating a non-profit to educate the public. At this same time Dave's desire to do more to help the poor in Africa then he was able to with his current non-profit activities. David Krieger (the President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation) shared with Dave the potential he saw to help Africa by awakening Americans to the dangers of militarism. Dave created Freedom From War on April 6, 2006 which was renamed the Teach Peace Foundation in 2007.

A few of the key individuals that helped created Teach Peace include Ruben Arvizu, Mary Anne Kirsch, Richard Lees, Michael Pach, Nancy Patterson, and Mary Wind. Click here for the full list of founders.
