Teach Peace Foundation Newsletter
To reach peace, teach peace! November 2009

Welcome!

The key message of our November newsletter is that acts of kindness teach peace.

Member donations are enabling us to make our world a better place. A few weeks ago we partnered with two groups to help people in desperate need of medical care. We are also updating you on the micro-businesses we started last year with an appeal to consider this alternative to traditional gift giving. Services in the U.S. continue to be focused on high school leadership training and the 2010 proposed plan is now online at http://www.teachpeace.com/Success%20Plan%202010.pdf. Your feedback will help guide our 2010 work.

Saving Lives
The Teach Peace Foundation partnered with medical professionals to create a team that served over 2,000 patients in Liberia, Africa. The team consisted of 3 doctors, 2 nurses, 1 nurse practitioner, 1 pharmacist, 1 dental hygienist, 1 medical technician, 1 nutritionist, 5 pharmacy assistants, 2 administrators, and 3 translators. The group members were from Texas, Florida, South Carolina, Montana and Liberia.

The medical services were delivered to people in Liberia the week of October 18 - 26, 2009.  The team worked 12 to 14 hours each day to treat patients with malaria, diarrhea, worm infestation, skin diseases, dental needs, sexually transmitted diseases, general infections, eye problems and neck/back pain.

Teach Peace Foundation staff Howard G. Mendoabor, Dolley Gurley and Moses Quiah participated in every stage of the service delivery. Howard was involved in screening and registration of patients, Dolly in dentistry, and Moses in dispensing medicine. All three also provided interpretation support and helped with crowd control as each day 400 to 600 patients were served.

At the end of the week, Jake Schroeder, a leader of the medical team, described the role played by Teach Peace Foundation as indispensable. He added his team's achievement in Liberia was totally dependent on assistance from the Teach Peace Foundation.

Jerome Cabeen, the leader of a program called Liberia Mission, captured the importance of this medical care when he wrote "One of the most dramatic moments for me came on Friday, October 23rd. I was walking the fence line of our newly built chain linked fence and I noticed a young lady trying to throw something over the fence, which is topped off by two large strands of barbed-wire. When I arrived I realized that the bundle that was caught on the barbed-wire was a baby. The mother told me that her baby was very sick and she thought if she "chucked" it inside the compound it would have a better chance of seeing the doctors. This is the desperation that the Liberians face everyday." Jerome made sure the baby was seen and fortunately this story ends with a baby that received the needed care.

The Teach Peace Foundation wishes to thank Jerome, Clarissa,  Harris, Jake, Santiago, Hediberto, Jeanea, Carla, Sue, Janet, Teri, Al, Bo, Denise, Janet, Jim, Mike, Lorenzo and our on-the-ground team of Howard, Dolley and Moses for their life saving work.
