Peace for Palestinians, Israelis, & Iranians

President Jimmy Carter's article An Unnecessary War explains why the Gaza violence is unnecessary. The latest statistics report approximately 900 Palestinians and 9 Israelis have died. If you subscribe to our analysis that an attack on Iran is planned, then you may see why some hawks find it is necessary to assault and divide the Gaza.

On January 8, 2009, Former Secretary of Defense (1993-1997) William Perry predicted an Israeli attack on Iran. He said, "It seems clear that Israel will not sit by idle while Iran takes the final steps toward becoming a nuclear power."

Peace Dove

If we did not live in a nuclear age, the future of the Palestinians in Gaza might be as predictable as when the indigenous people of North America or "Indians" were forced to leave their homes. From 1511 to 1890 native Americans were massacred by Europeans who possessed superior weapons.

The State of Israel was established in 1948 by Europeans and the Palestinians were forced to leave their homes. Israel, funded and supplied by US taxpayers, possesses superior weapons. As a result, for every Israeli killed, 100 or more Palestinians are killed (especially when deaths caused by the economic sanctions are considered).

Israel's attack on Palestinians in Gaza is evoking protests and hate in many countries, and is likely to invoke a new cycle of violence. In contrast, negotiating a solution to the conflict as independent Jewish and Palestinian states around the 1967 borders can lead to a peaceful future that most on both sides would support.

At the Teach Peace Foundation, all life is valued and cherished.

Education is the key to saving Israeli and Palestinian lives plus preventing a war with Iran.

Members are encouraged to Take Action and stand up for peace.

Economic Crisis & the New World Order

The Bank of England, founded in 1694, cut interest rates to the lowest level in its 315-year history on January 8th. The new 1.5 percent interest rate is designed to offset "an unusually sharp and synchronized downturn."

Unfortunately, appointments and statements from President-elect Barack Obama suggest he may repeat mistakes made in the Great Depression as explained in The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression by Amity Shlaes.

The total value of the bailouts, correctly projected at over $7 trillion by Teach Peace in October and $8.5 billion by Bloomberg, now exceeds the combined cost of every major war fought by the US. According to the war costs calculated by the Congressional Research Service and the value of the bailouts calculated by Bloomberg News, the cost of the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan cost a total of $7.2 trillion in inflation-adjusted 2008 dollars.

A New World Order

Does Henry Kissinger know something that Americans are not being told?

Henry Kissinger, former secretary of state under President Nixon, said crisis and conflicts across the globe are opportunities. He observed that the current global conditions and international respect for Barack Obama has created the perfect setting for the establishment of a "New World Order."

Trial of Henry Kissinger

Unfortunately, as the documentary The Trials of Henry Kissinger reveals, Kissinger's "New World Order" is an anti-democratic global security state that is inconsistent with American values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Success in Africa!

From soldier to student

The people of Liberia, a country of 3.3 million people on the west coast of Africa, have made tremendous progress as illustrated by the transition from children soldiers in 2003 to peaceful students in 2009. The boy on the right is holding the Teaching Peace coloring book.

Liberia group picture

A Teach Peace team of 6 people recently returned from Liberia, Africa. The trip was a huge success because supporters donated funds for 44 goats, 270 chickens, 8 micro-businesses, $9,000 for clean water projects, and over $6,900 for lifesaving food aid.

Each trip participant was in charge of a separate project so we were able to accomplish a tremendous amount in just a few weeks.

Our economic justice program is primarily focused on remote villages where scant resources exist to break the cycle of poverty. Imagine people living in a small stick-and-mud house with leaves for a roof. The poverty is severe as the 14-year civil war ruined farms and robbed people of everything they owned including their animals. We also give high priority to disabled children because there is no safety net, which makes this group the most in need of assistance. To make matters worse, disabled people are viewed as "witched" and without a hand-up, they awaken each morning only to face another day of hunger and persecution.

Martin Luther King, Jr. summed up our Africa Peacemaker program when he wrote "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

Teach Peace Foundation deliverables include:

Self-Sustaining Livestock Program

A livestock program to help mothers and families struggling to feed their children. This livestock program may prove to be our biggest economic justice success.

Clement and Frieda Chiang led the effort to raise much of the funds for this program. Once in Liberia they led the program implementation. Clement came up with a self-sustaining formula that to our knowledge is the most innovative and exciting that we have seen. Specifically, he formed community-based businesses in 4 villages and we expect to be in at least 6 more within a year.

Livestock in truck

The 5 step self-sustaining formula is:

1. A group of people in a small village receives 6 goats (4 female and 2 male) and 45 chickens. The first 3 goats and 15 chickens produced continue to be owned and shared by the village.
2. The next 9 goats and 60 chickens produced by the original livestock gift are raised to maturity to help people in another village. By helping people in another village, the people participating in the program benefit from the dignity that comes from helping others.
3. The intermediaries earn a respectable annual income as they keep 3 of the 9 goats and 15 of the 60 chickens returned. In return for this payment, they manage the entire process including repayment and provide all forms of assistance necessary for the program to thrive. For example, an intermediary managing 3 villages would have 9 goats and 45 chickens each year to sell as income.
4. The intermediary continues the process by expanding the program to a new village.
5. The cycle of poverty is broken in a meaningful way by this community based hand-up.

More often than not, people in the villages cannot read. The picture below was used by Clement and team to present this program (click on the picture to see a larger version).

Micro-Businesses

Joey Chiang, a high school student, took the lead on starting a clean water micro-businesses.

Joey Training

Every two minutes, a child dies from drinking bad water. The water purification system is shown below. This system produces chlorine and purifies large quantities of water for several years.

Water Purification System

Joey led the training and everyone was amazed by the effectiveness of the system. The process works by using an electrical current provided by a rechargeable 12 volt battery to convert water mixed with salt into chlorine. We learned from our first-hand experience that a small plastic bag of chlorine sells for 10 Liberian Dollars or about 6 cents. Benedict Himmie is now hard at work making chlorine to help thousands of people obtain clean drinking water.

Micro-business can make a big difference in the day-to-day lives of people. For example, Christlam Duor received a $1,500 investment in May 2007 from a Teach Peace member to start a food grinding business. He purchased a machine to grind and roast peanuts and now he earns $3,600 a year which is a lot in Liberia as the annual average income is only about $450. Christlam gave Mary Wind and David Dionisi a tour of one of the markets where dozens of merchants sold the peanut butter made from his machine.

Scholarship Program

Scholarship winners

Shown above are some of the students that received a scholarship with David Dionisi in the center of the picture. Rev. Tim Malone, the president of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund, asked the Teach Peace Foundation to identify and select African children to receive scholarships. This is the second year Teach Peace has been able to help in this capacity and we are always willing to assist as it means so much for the scholarship recipients. Mary Wind led this project and in total we delivered twenty-eight $50 scholarships. While $50 may not sound like a lot, it can fund a year of elementary school and is large enough to bring grateful parents to tears.

Food Aid & Wells

Teach Peace's President Mary Wind brought a truck with food to a group of disabled people at the Our Lady of Fatima Rehabilitation Center. We also funded the work to fix and dig wells. Access to clean drinking water is an increasingly challenging problem. For reasons we do not fully understand, many wells in Liberia are drying up and need to be dug deeper.

Photo Story Project

Renee Chiang used her video camera to film the stories of the war orphans and poor children. She also shared many hours talking with the children and playing games. If you are ever interested in visiting and are wondering what skills you have that could be put to good use, know that simply spending time with the children is one of the best things you can do.

Joey and Renee attend Mercer Island High School and their school fund raising efforts made the Christmas gift program possible. Money raised from their high school together with some of the donations from adults also helped fund a Photo Story project. Some of the pictures are very stunning and help capture life in Liberia from the perspective of the children. We are now creating a new section of the Teach Peace website so that people can see Liberia from the eyes of the children.

Creating Smiles

Renee led the logistical operation for distributing Christmas gifts to 120 children at the Liberia Mission program and the Our Lady of Fatima Rehabilitation Center. The children were extremely excited to receive books, toys and clothes.

Learning African Dancing

Dancing in Liberia

Frieda Chiang helped on every project including our team's performance of an African dance which Mary Wind believes could be used on YouTube to dramatically drive up our website traffic!

The Teach Peace board of directors wishes to thank everyone who helped make our Africa Peacemaker program a huge success! For more information about our work in Africa or how a donation you made helped break the cycle of poverty, please call us at 530-554-7061.

Life is Beautiful

On January 5th, a report in the United Kingdom found one in 10 young adults believed life was not worth living or meaningless. This alarming report mirrors reports in the United States that suggests there are serious problems in our society besides the deepening recession. The solution: redefine the meaning of life or success from financial wealth or material possessions to our contribution to a better world.

Albert Einstein observed: "It is high time the ideal of success should be replaced with the ideal of service."

Martin Luther King, Jr. identified the ingredients for greatness when he said: "Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve....You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
