Question the Answers

LESSON PLAN

1.  The student class leader (previously selected by the instructor) divides the class into 5 person jigsaw groups.

2.  The group leader selects one student in each group as the group leader.

3.  Segment the lesson into 3 parts. Students learn how to question the answers by: (1) Identifying source information, (2) Finding multiple sources, and (3) Considering different perspectives. For example, in October 2005 did the president of Iran call for Israel to be wiped off the map?

4.  The group leader assigns students in the group to one of the 3 segments. The group leader also is responsible for a segment.

5.  Students are given time to read their segment and outline key points.

6.  Students leave their jigsaw group for 20 minutes to meet with other students sharing their same segment assignment. Students discuss the main points of their segment and prepare to report back to their jigsaw group.

7.  Students return to their jigsaw groups.

8.  Jigsaw group leaders facilitate having students present her or his segment to the group. The group leader also encourages group members to ask questions.

9.  The class instructor observing each group, assists when group leaders need assistance.

10.  At the end of the session, the class lesson leader asks students to answer the lesson review questions.

Additional instructor notes:

The President Ahmadinejad example is an opportunity to help students learn they should not automatically believe news broadcasts.

There are many media examples such as Reuters and even statements from presidential candidates to support Ahmadinejad called for military force to wipe Israel off the map. At the same time, the translations on the official Iranian site (irna.com) of his speech and his clarification at http://www.breitbart.tv/?p=5973 are very different. So who do we believe? Do we believe the person saying what his words mean or the media engine preparing for war against his country?

The truth is Iran's President Ahmadinejad has been repeatedly misquoted to brainwash the American public that war is the only option. In 2005, Ahmadinejad made a clear call for a nonviolent regime change in Israel and his statement has been incorrectly reported as wanting to use a nuclear weapon to "wipe Israel off the map." Despite confirmation by many translators that he has not threatened Israel with a nuclear weapon, the war propaganda continues.

Ahmadinejad's words were twisted because many news services use an 'independent' company called Middle East Media Research Institute (Mermi) to translate Middle Eastern languages. Memri is owned by Meyrav Wurmser and former Israeli Military Intelligence officer Colonel Yigal Carmon. Meyrav is the wife of David Wurmser who is an aide to Dick Cheney.

Unfortunately, the mainstream media and leading presidential candidates continue to hammer away with the propaganda that "the president of Iran is calling for Israel to be wiped off the map." For additional information on this key piece of war propaganda, read former CIA officer Ray McGovern's latest article.
