Our meeting began with the new teach peace song. Laura Sandage wrote and sang this incredible song. She was accompanied by Andrew Corbett (guitar) and John Swann (bass). All are local musicians and this was the first performance of teach peace.
The teach peace song is dedicated to Patrick McCaffrey. Patrick died in Iraq on June 22, 2004. On a related note, Jim Walsh is leading the Teach Peace Camp Patrick on June 22, 2006 in Stockton. To learn more or participate with Jim Walsh, Nadia McCaffrey, Dave Dionisi and many others, see http://www.teachpeace.com/camppatrick.htm.
Mary then reviewed the agenda and thanked Ted Neff and the Friends for providing the facility for the meeting. Dave reviewed key developments since our last meeting in May. Near the top of the list is a series of major improvements in the Teach Peace website. See http://www.teachpeace.com/videos.htm and watch one of the educational and entertaining videos to obtain an appreciation for this comment. Teach Peace was promoted on television in a KMTV interview available online from the Teach Peace video section. We also had our first peace collage printed in a newspaper (see http://www.teachpeace.com/davisenterprise.htm). Members participated in a number of Stand Up For Peace opportunities. A big thank you to Nancy Patterson and Mary Wind for their efforts as we now have over 400 photos in our peace collage.
Dave participated in the Sacramento Peace Pyramid that is run by Teach Peace members Tom and Dar King. Teach Peace member Damion Sharpe also filmed Teach Peace members for the documentary Thou Shall Not Kill. Teach Peace members are increasingly making contact with other organizations and sharing the idea that when we work together, we can bring about a better world. For example, at the Sacramento Stonewall Four Freedoms dinner, a Teach Peace lapel pin was presented to former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown. The Teach Peace organization is also receiving publicity on the radio from both 1240 AM and 1320 AM. On June 9, Dave also presented the Teach Peace open source peace model at the Gigabyte café in Sacramento. Many thanks to Steve Reed who made this event possible.
Teach Peace is planning to present our open source peace model of teaching peace at the UN Global Summit in October. The Teach Peace board has arranged for two of our three peace awards that will be given during our Evening of Peace annual dinner on October 1. The first is the Distinguished Peace Leadership award and Will and Jane Lotter are the recipients. The second award is our Peace Media award and Christine Craft is the recipient. We have not decided who will receive our Lighting Rod of Courage award and nominations for the Teach Peace board of directors can be sent to contact@teachpeace.com.
Teach Peace has reached out to many peace organizations with offers to join the coalition. As a result the Teach Peace organization is growing rapidly (see http://www.teachpeace.com/ffwcoalition.htm).
Projects Presentation/Deliverables and Initiative Sign Up Mary reviewed the process that led to the Projects for consideration by the group. Over 25 projects were identified by the group participating in the May meeting. The projects with the most votes were placed on flip charts on the front wall. Also, all projects met the three mandates of:
Mary stated that these projects were outlined on the flip charts under the four categories we identified as essential to achieve successful self sufficiency. Specifically the four categories are Education, Membership, Publicity, and Fund-Raising. Each of the initiatives were then briefly described. Members asked questions as other members went up to the flip charts and signed up for various initiatives.
The following was captured on the flip charts:
