Micro-Businesses: Livestock
Program
We help break the cycle of poverty in Africa with lifesaving
gifts of chickens and goats.

The above picture shows Teach Peace's Moses Quiah
delivering chickens.
If you would like to help with a gift that keeps
giving, consider donating
$25 for a family to
receive chickens or
$120 for the gift of a goat. Donations are tax
deductible and we will send a gift email to the person you select.
You can choose to receive gift cards (click
here for the goat card and here for the
chicken card) or an electronic gift letter. For a sample
of the "e" message that is sent, click here.
You will be copied on the gift email so that you know that it was delivered. Consider giving this as a unique gift in the true spirit of
the holidays.
The 5 step self-sustaining
livestock formula is:
1. Howard
Mendoabor, a Liberian Teach Peace Foundation employee, selects a village that is
100 people or less and has a chief wanting to start a community micro-business.
2. The
village receives 6 goats (4 female and 2 male) and 45 chickens.
3. The
first 3 goats and 15 chickens born continue to be owned and shared by the
village. The next 9 goats and 60 chickens are raised to maturity and given to
help people in another village. Everyone participating in the program benefits
from the dignity that comes from helping others.
4. The
Teach Peace Foundation intermediaries delivering the animals earn a respectable
annual income as they keep 3 of the 9 goats and 15 of the 60 chickens from step
3. In return for this payment, they manage the process including repayment and
provide assistance to help the animals thrive. For example, an intermediary
managing 6 villages would have 18 goats and 90 chickens to sell as income by the
end of 2 years.
5. The
intermediary continues the process by taking the remaining 6 goats and 45
chickens from step 3 to a new village.
